Programming and Play: Creative Computing in Primary School
Meet Linda!
Linda Liukas is a programmer, storyteller and illustrator. Her children's book, Hello Ruby, is the "world’s most whimsical way to learn about technology, computing and coding.” Liukas founded Rails Girls, which has organized workshops in over 230 cities, teaching the basics of programming to more than 10,000 women. Linda worked at Codeacademy, which she left to write stories that teach children about software and programming. She won the 2013 Ruby Hero prize and was named the Digital Champion of Finland by the EU Commissioner for Digital Agenda.

Language: Most of the workshop will be run in English, but there will be Spanish assistance available.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
Session 1: Introduction to computational thinking
In this session we’ll familiarise ourselves with the key concepts and practices of computational thinking. We’ll reflect on how CT can be offered across curriculum and offer cross-curricular examples. We’ll cover the main aspects of CT through unplugged activities. Educators will learn to analyze concepts around computational thinking and describe how they relate to everyday life.
Session 2: Coding workshop with Scratch, part 1
Introduction to block-based languages. How to choose different programming languages and syntaxes. Why we are using Scratch. Educators will learn to create and test their ideas with Scratch and describe how the computational thinking concepts from the previous session translate into syntax.
Session 3: Coding workshop with Scratch, part 2
Vocabulary of Scratch. We’ll continue with challenges to learn the basics of Scratch. Teachers will start creating their own Scratch projects. Educators will work through strategies for problem solving and classroom activation when teaching with Scratch.
Session 4: Computers & society
How do computers work and talk to each other? Teachers will familiarise themselves with computer hardware and get to know how computers work. Educators will analyse what are the societal impacts of computing and learn how computers communicate to each other.
